Town History:
Bergenfield was incorporated on June 25, 1894. In the early years of its existence as a community, it bore the name "Schraalenburg" and was settled by prosperous Dutch farmers. In 1872, Jersey City & Albany Railroad built a train station in the Borough and for lack of a better name called it "Bergen Fields". This was later modified to "Bergenfield".
