Town History:

Originally, Ridgefield was called "English Neighborhood". This covered land between the Hackensack and Hudson Rivers stretching from Fairview to Englewood. Ridgefield was named because of the Ridge running from Fairview to Englewood. Ridgefield became a borough in 1887; the first Bergen County municipality to separate from the above. Among well-known known citizens was Samuel B. Morse, the inventor of the telegraph. He owned large tracts of land in Ridgefield and Palisades Park. Morse Avenue, Ridgefield, is named in his honor.
